A yes/no question uses a question form of the verb: tá becomes an bhfuil. The answer is not "yes" or "no" - Irish has neither word - but the verb echoed back: Tá or Níl. Other questions start with cé, cad, cá, cathain or conas.
Examples
- An bhfuil Béarla agat?
- Do you speak English?
- Cad is ainm duit?
- What is your name?
- Cá bhfuil tú i do chónaí?
- Where do you live?
The mistake to avoid
There is no word for "yes" - answering a question means repeating its verb.
Where this fits in
Greetings & introductions, Irish Gaelic A1: Say hello, give your name, ask someone else's, and where they're from. Notice how the start of a word can soften (séimhiú) after certain words.
