Ní negates the present and future and lenites the verb after it: ní thuigim. Níor negates the regular past and lenites too: níor thuig mé. The irregular verbs have their own negative forms, such as ní dheachaigh and ní raibh.

The mistake to avoid
Past regular verbs take níor, not ní: níor thuig mé.
