Many German verbs are learned together with a preposition and a case, and neither can be guessed from English. Sich kümmern um takes the accusative, warten auf takes the accusative, sich entschuldigen für takes the accusative, and helfen takes a plain dative with no preposition.
Examples
- Ich kümmere mich um das Problem.
- I will take care of the problem.
- Können Sie mir bitte helfen?
- Can you help me, please?
- Wir warten auf eine Lösung.
- We are waiting for a solution.
The mistake to avoid
Helfen never takes a preposition and never the accusative: ich helfe dir.
Where this fits in
