Most verbs build the Perfekt with haben, but verbs of movement and of changing state take sein: ich bin gefahren, ich bin aufgestanden, ich bin geblieben. For ago, German uses vor plus the dative: vor zwei Tagen, vor einem Jahr.
Examples
- Gestern bin ich nach München gefahren.
- Yesterday I travelled to Munich.
- Vor zwei Tagen habe ich sie angerufen.
- Two days ago I called her.
- Letzte Woche sind wir zu Hause geblieben.
- Last week we stayed at home.
The mistake to avoid
Bleiben and sein take sein even though nothing moves.
