German marks a stretch of time by putting it in the accusative rather than adding a preposition. Letztes Wochenende, jeden Tag, nächste Woche, den ganzen Abend all work this way. That is why letzten Monat ends in -en: it is masculine and accusative.
Examples
- Letztes Wochenende bin ich nach Hamburg gereist.
- Last weekend I travelled to Hamburg.
- Letzten Monat habe ich viele Museen besucht.
- Last month I visited a lot of museums.
- Wir sind den ganzen Tag gewandert.
- We hiked all day.
The mistake to avoid
No preposition here: letztes Wochenende, not "an letztem Wochenende".
Where this fits in
Talking about the past, German A2: Tell stories about yesterday, last weekend, and life experiences using the Perfekt tense.
