Reported speech in Danish is an at-clause, and the tense steps back with the reporting verb: præsens becomes præteritum, perfektum becomes pluskvamperfektum, and a future becomes ville + infinitiv. A yes/no question is introduced by om. The clause is subordinate, so ikke goes in front of the verb.
Examples
- Han sagde, at han var træt, og at han ville ringe senere.
- He said that he was tired and that he would call later.
- Hun spurgte, om jeg havde læst rapporten.
- She asked whether I had read the report.
- Chefen bad os udsætte mødet til næste uge.
- The manager asked us to postpone the meeting until next week.
The mistake to avoid
Danish keeps the comma in front of at, and the adverb moves: "han sagde, at han ikke kom". Putting ikke after the verb inside an at-clause is the classic learner slip.
