With the reporting verb in the past (va dir, va explicar, va advertir), the reported verb steps back: present becomes imperfet, perfet becomes plusquamperfet, and futur becomes condicional. A yes/no question is introduced by si, and an order becomes que + subjuntiu.

The mistake to avoid
The weak pronouns move with the verb: "digue-m'ho" becomes "em va dir que ho..." - keeping the enclitic form inside the reported clause is the commonest slip.
