To argue about something unreal or unlikely, use si + imperfect subjunctive (fos, tingués, pogués, hi hagués) in the if-part, and the conditional (-ria endings: faria, milloraria) in the result. The same subjunctive follows M'agradaria que…
Examples
- Si el govern invertís més en educació, el país milloraria.
- If the government invested more in education, the country would improve.
- Si jo fos periodista, no publicaria aquesta notícia.
- If I were a journalist, I wouldn't publish that story.
- M'agradaria que hi hagués un debat més honest.
- I'd like there to be a more honest debate.
- Si poguéssim escollir, ho faríem d'una altra manera.
- If we could choose, we'd do it another way.
The mistake to avoid
Never put the conditional after si: it's Si tingués diners…, not *Si tindria diners…*.
