Russian has no articles at all - кофе is "coffee", "a coffee" and "the coffee" alike. Every noun is masculine, feminine or neuter, and the ending usually tells you which: a consonant is masculine, -а or -я is feminine, -о or -е is neuter.
Examples
- Это кофе.
- This is a coffee.
- У меня есть брат и сестра.
- I have a brother and a sister.
- Окно открыто.
- The window is open.
The mistake to avoid
Do not look for a word for "the" - inserting one is the commonest English-speaker habit here.
Where this fits in
Greetings & introductions, Russian A1: Say hello, give your name, ask someone else's, and where they're from.
