When you name someone's job, Romanian uses the bare noun with no article after a fi, a lucra ca or a deveni: "Sunt inginer", not "Sunt un inginer". Match the noun to the person's gender (profesor / profesoară, student / studentă). The article returns only when an adjective describes the noun: "Este un profesor foarte bun."
Examples
- Sunt inginer la o firmă de construcții.
- I'm an engineer at a construction company.
- Sora mea este studentă la medicină.
- My sister is a medical student.
- Lucrez ca traducător de cinci ani.
- I've been working as a translator for five years.
- Vreau să devin medic, dar este un drum lung.
- I want to become a doctor, but it's a long road.
The mistake to avoid
Copying English "a/an" and saying "Sunt un inginer" — drop un/o unless an adjective follows the noun.
