The finite verb must be the second element in a statement. If you start with something other than the subject - a time phrase, a place, an opinion phrase - the subject moves behind the verb to protect that second slot.
Examples
- I byen er det mange problemer.
- In the city there are many problems.
- Etter min mening bør vi gjøre mer.
- In my opinion we ought to do more.
- Nå tar jeg bussen til sentrum.
- Now I'm taking the bus downtown.
- Hvert år flytter mange folk hit.
- Every year many people move here.
The mistake to avoid
Keeping English order after a fronted phrase ('Nå jeg tar bussen') - the verb, not the subject, must come second.
