Norwegian nouns are en-words, ei-words or et-words, and the gender must be learned with the noun. It decides the definite ending - en bil becomes bilen, et rom becomes rommet - and whether an adjective takes -t: et stort rom, en stor bil.
Examples
- Jeg vil gjerne bestille et dobbeltrom.
- I would like to book a double room.
- Rommet er lite, men frokosten er god.
- The room is small, but the breakfast is good.
- Vi ser etter et rolig hotell i sentrum.
- We are looking for a quiet hotel in the centre.
The mistake to avoid
Ei-words can always take en instead, so most learners simply use en and et.
