After the modal verbs kan, skal, vil, må the second verb is a bare infinitive: jeg vil sove. After almost everything else Norwegian puts å in front of it: jeg pleier å sove, jeg prøver å lese. The å is never dropped there.
Examples
- Jeg pleier å lese en bok om kvelden.
- I usually read a book in the evening.
- Jeg vil hvile litt etter maten.
- I want to rest a bit after the meal.
- Hun liker å se på TV før hun legger seg.
- She likes watching TV before she goes to bed.
The mistake to avoid
No å after a modal: jeg vil sove, never "jeg vil å sove".
