Norwegian builds new nouns by gluing words into one: klima + endring = klimaendring, miljø + vern = miljøvern. The LAST part decides the gender and the core meaning, the first part narrows it, and some compounds take a linking -s- or -e- (arbeidsplass, barnehage). It is always written as one word.
Examples
- Klimaendringene rammer de fattigste landene hardest.
- Climate change hits the poorest countries hardest.
- Miljøvern er blitt et viktig tema i valgkampen.
- Environmental protection has become an important topic in the election campaign.
- Vi trenger bedre kollektivtransport i distriktene.
- We need better public transport in rural areas.
- Forbrukersamfunnet produserer enorme mengder avfall.
- The consumer society produces enormous amounts of waste.
The mistake to avoid
Splitting a compound into two words: 'lamme koteletter' means paralysed chops, while lammekoteletter are lamb chops. If it is one concept, it is one word.
Where this fits in
Miljø, klima og forbruk, Norwegian B2: Discuss climate change, consumption and sustainability, and weigh who is responsible for solving it.
