The thing the verb acts on takes 을 after a consonant and 를 after a vowel: 밥을 먹어요, 커피를 마셔요. In casual speech it is often dropped when the meaning is obvious, but writing it is always correct.
Examples
- 아침을 먹어요.
- I eat breakfast.
- 커피를 마셔요.
- I drink coffee.
- 점심을 같이 먹어요.
- Let's have lunch together.
The mistake to avoid
Do not confuse 을/를 with the topic 은/는 - one marks the object, the other what the sentence is about.
