Essays, articles and reports drop 요 entirely and use the plain style: action verbs take -ㄴ다 after a vowel and -는다 after a consonant, descriptive verbs stay in the dictionary -다 form, and nouns take -이다. Mixing 해요 into an argumentative text instantly marks it as spoken.
Examples
- 한국 사회는 빠르게 변한다.
- Korean society is changing rapidly.
- 많은 사람들이 이 문제를 심각하게 여긴다.
- Many people regard this problem as serious.
- 따라서 새로운 대책이 필요하다.
- Therefore, new measures are necessary.
- 이것이 이 글의 핵심 주장이다.
- This is the central claim of this essay.
The mistake to avoid
Adding -ㄴ다 to adjectives (좋는다) - descriptive verbs keep the bare dictionary form: 좋다.
Where this fits in
논리적 글쓰기, Korean C1: Build a logical argument: claims, evidence, counterargument, and persuasion.
