After verbs of thinking or saying (sílim, ceapaim, deir sé), the clause that follows starts with "go", which eclipses the next verb — so "tá" becomes "go bhfuil" and "oibríonn" becomes "go n-oibríonn". The negative version is "nach".
Examples
- Sílim go bhfuil an post an-suimiúil.
- I think that the job is very interesting.
- Deir sí go n-oibríonn sí sa bhanc.
- She says that she works in the bank.
- Ceapaim nach bhfuil an obair éasca.
- I think that the work is not easy.
The mistake to avoid
Leaving "go" out because English can drop "that" — in Irish the linking word is compulsory and it changes the verb.
