Greek verbs change their ending for each person, so the ending already tells you who is speaking: είμαι (I am), είσαι (you are), είναι (he/she/it is). Because of this, you normally leave out the words for "I" and "you" and just use the verb on its own.
Examples
- Είμαι η Μαρία.
- I'm Maria.
- Από πού είσαι;
- Where are you from?
- Ο Γιώργος είναι από την Αθήνα.
- Giorgos is from Athens.
The mistake to avoid
Don't add εγώ or εσύ out of habit — "Εγώ είμαι η Μαρία" sounds like you are contradicting someone.
Where this fits in
Greetings & introductions, Greek A1: Say hello, give your name, ask someone else's, and where they're from.
