German has paired connectors that hold two ideas together in one sentence. Je ... desto expresses proportion (je mehr, desto besser): the je-clause sends its verb to the end, and desto is followed immediately by the comparative and then the verb. Sowohl ... als auch (both ... and), weder ... noch (neither ... nor), entweder ... oder (either ... or) and zwar ... aber (admittedly ... but) link words or clauses without changing the word order around them.
Examples
- Je früher wir handeln, desto geringer sind die Kosten.
- The earlier we act, the lower the costs.
- Sowohl die Industrie als auch die Verbraucher müssen umdenken.
- Both industry and consumers have to rethink.
- Die Maßnahme ist zwar teuer, aber wirksam.
- The measure is admittedly expensive, but effective.
- Weder Verbote noch Appelle haben bisher geholfen.
- Neither bans nor appeals have helped so far.
The mistake to avoid
Word order after desto: the comparative comes first and the verb second - 'desto besser ist das Ergebnis', not 'desto das Ergebnis ist besser'.
Where this fits in
Umwelt & Nachhaltigkeit, German B2: Discuss climate, consumption and the energy transition at B2 level - with two-part connectors (je ... desto, sowohl ... als auch, zwar ... aber) that structure an argument, purpose clauses, and the vocabulary of the German environmental debate.
