The Konjunktiv II is how German says 'would'. For most verbs you use würde + infinitive (ich würde gehen), but sein, haben and the modal verbs have their own one-word forms: wäre, hätte, könnte, müsste, sollte, dürfte. The same forms make a request polite (Könnten Sie ...?), a wish sayable (Ich hätte gern ...) and advice gentle (Du solltest ...).
Examples
- Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?
- Could you help me, please?
- Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.
- I would like a coffee.
- Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr lesen.
- If I had time, I would read more.
- An deiner Stelle würde ich früher schlafen gehen.
- In your place I would go to bed earlier.
The mistake to avoid
Using würde with haben and sein: say 'ich hätte' and 'ich wäre', never 'ich würde haben' or 'ich würde sein'.
Where this fits in
Höflich bitten und wünschen: Konjunktiv II, German B1: Use the Konjunktiv II (würde, hätte, wäre, könnte) to make polite requests, express wishes and give advice - the everyday conditional that turns a demand into a question and a dream into a sentence.
