French uses one word for both "this" and "that": ce before a masculine noun, cette before a feminine one, ces in the plural, and cet before a masculine noun starting with a vowel. To ask a price, say c'est combien ? or combien coûte …?
Examples
- C'est combien, cette chemise ?
- How much is this shirt?
- Je prends ce livre, pas celui-là.
- I'll take this book, not that one.
- Combien coûtent ces chaussures ?
- How much are these shoes?
The mistake to avoid
Cet is only there to avoid two vowels colliding - cet homme, not ce homme; it is still masculine.
Where this fits in
