To show one past event happened before another past event, use the imparfait of avoir or être plus the past participle. It is the equivalent of English "had done", and the être/agreement rules of the passé composé still apply.
Examples
- Quand je suis arrivé, elle était déjà partie.
- When I arrived, she had already left.
- Il m'a dit qu'il avait perdu son passeport.
- He told me he had lost his passport.
- Nous avions fini avant midi.
- We had finished before noon.
The mistake to avoid
Don't use the passé composé for the earlier event — "elle est déjà partie" flattens the time order.
