French negation is a pair that wraps the verb: ne before it and pas after it. Ne shortens to n' before a vowel. In everyday speech the ne is very often dropped, so you will HEAR "je sais pas", but you should write both halves.
Examples
- Il n'est pas encore une heure.
- It isn't one o'clock yet.
- Je ne travaille pas le dimanche.
- I don't work on Sundays.
- Non, je ne parle pas allemand.
- No, I don't speak German.
The mistake to avoid
Pas is the half that carries the meaning - dropping it leaves the sentence positive.
