Avoir (to have) is the other verb you cannot avoid: j'ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont. Beyond -er there are two smaller regular families - finir-type verbs in -ir and vendre-type verbs in -re - which you will mostly meet one at a time.
Examples
- J'ai une réservation pour deux personnes.
- I have a reservation for two.
- Vous avez du pain ?
- Do you have any bread?
- On finit à huit heures.
- We finish at eight.
The mistake to avoid
Avoir is used where English uses "to be" for age and hunger: j'ai faim, j'ai vingt ans.
