Alongside the inner cases, Finnish has an outer set for surfaces, and for many places by convention: -lla for being on or at, -lta for coming from, -lle for going to. Torilla, asemalta, postiin - which set a place takes simply has to be learned.
Examples
- Käyn torilla joka lauantai.
- I go to the market square every Saturday.
- Tulen juuri asemalta.
- I am just coming from the station.
- Menen postiin iltapäivällä.
- I am going to the post office in the afternoon.
The mistake to avoid
Kaupassa uses the inner case but torilla uses the outer one - these pairings are fixed.
