Finnish has no word for not. It has a negative verb - en, et, ei, emme, ette, eivät - which takes the person, while the main verb drops to a bare stem. In the past the main verb becomes a participle instead: en mennyt, emme menneet.
Examples
- En mennyt museoon eilen.
- I did not go to the museum yesterday.
- Emme nähneet koko kaupunkia.
- We did not see the whole city.
- Hän ei tullut mukaan matkalle.
- She did not come along on the trip.
The mistake to avoid
Only the negative verb takes the person: en mennyt, never "en menin".
