A modal verb is followed by the first infinitive: voin tulla, saan tulla. Täytyy and pitää are different: the person goes into the genitive and the verb does not agree - minun täytyy mennä, sinun pitää soittaa. That genitive subject is the single most common learner error at A2.
Examples
- Voitko lähettää minulle osoitteen?
- Can you send me the address?
- Minun täytyy valitettavasti lähteä aiemmin tänään.
- Unfortunately I have to leave earlier today.
- Saanko häiritä hetken?
- May I disturb you for a moment?
The mistake to avoid
With täytyy the subject is genitive and the verb stays in the third person: minun täytyy, never minä täydyn.
