Finnish has no words for 'in', 'from' or 'to': the location goes on the end of the noun. The inside cases are -ssa/-ssä (in: keittiössä), -sta/-stä (out of: keittiöstä) and the illative, which lengthens the last vowel and adds -n (into: keittiöön). Surfaces and open places use the outer set -lla/-llä, -lta/-ltä, -lle (pöydällä, pöydältä, pöydälle).
Examples
- Olen keittiössä.
- I am in the kitchen.
- Tulen juuri kaupasta.
- I am just coming from the shop.
- Menen olohuoneeseen.
- I am going into the living room.
- Kirja on pöydällä.
- The book is on the table.
The mistake to avoid
Using the inner cases for everything: in Finnish you are 'on' the street and 'on' the bus stop (kadulla, pysäkillä), not in them.
Where this fits in
Koti ja kaupunki, Finnish A2: Describe your home, find your way around town, and go shopping using the six local cases.
