If you say when something happened, Finnish uses the imperfekti: eilen kävin. If you leave the time open and only report that it happened at some point in your life, it uses olen plus the participle: olen käynyt Roomassa.
Examples
- Oletko koskaan käynyt Lapissa?
- Have you ever been to Lapland?
- En ole koskaan maistanut mämmiä.
- I have never tasted mammi.
- Muutama vuosi sitten asuin Turussa.
- A few years ago I lived in Turku.
The mistake to avoid
A named past time blocks the perfect: eilen kävin, not "eilen olen käynyt".
Where this fits in
Menneisyys ja viime viikonloppu, Finnish A2: Talk about the past: yesterday, last weekend, and travel memories.
