Finnish invites with the passive: Mennäänkö elokuviin? is literally "is it gone to the cinema?" and means "shall we go?". The same passive without -ko is the answer: Mennään! "Let's go!". This is the everyday way to suggest something - the me-form (menemmekö) sounds like a written report.
Examples
- Mennäänkö lauantaina elokuviin?
- Shall we go to the cinema on Saturday?
- Aloitetaan mieluummin huomenna.
- Let's start tomorrow instead.
- Mitä sanot kahvista töiden jälkeen?
- What do you say to a coffee after work?
The mistake to avoid
The -ko/-kö clitic attaches to the verb and the verb comes first: Mennäänkö?, not Me mennäänkö?
