Finnish puts the counted noun into the partitive singular, not the plural: kaksi kirjaa, viisi elokuvaa. Only yksi takes the plain form. Words of quantity work the same way: paljon kirjoja, vähän aikaa, though those take the partitive plural.
Examples
- Luin kaksi kirjaa tässä kuussa.
- I read two books this month.
- Katson paljon elokuvia viikonloppuisin.
- I watch a lot of films at weekends.
- Minulla on vain yksi levy häneltä.
- I only have one record by her.
The mistake to avoid
Kaksi kirjaa is singular in form even though it means two.
