Whatever case an object would take, negation forces it into the partitive: luin kirjan becomes en lukenut kirjaa, näin talon becomes en nähnyt taloa. This holds for every negated sentence with an object, without exception.

- I did not get an answer from customer service.
- Se ei ole toiminut eilisestä asti.
- It has not worked since yesterday.

The rule is automatic: a negative verb never takes a total object.
