Many Dutch verbs are made of a small word plus a verb (innemen, uitrusten, opstaan). In a simple sentence the little prefix splits off and travels to the end, while the verb itself is conjugated in second place. In the perfectum the ge- sits in the middle: ingenomen, uitgerust.
Examples
- Neem deze tabletten drie keer per dag in.
- Take these tablets three times a day.
- Ik rust vandaag even uit, want ik voel me niet goed.
- I am resting a bit today, because I do not feel well.
- Hij is gisteren te laat opgestaan.
- He got up too late yesterday.
The mistake to avoid
Learners forget to send the prefix to the end: it is "Ik neem de pillen in", not "Ik inneem de pillen".
