For the past you normally say hebben plus a past participle, which goes to the end of the sentence. For regular verbs the participle is ge- + stem + -t or -d: -t if the stem ends in one of the letters of 't kofschip (t, k, f, s, ch, p), otherwise -d, so werken -> gewerkt but wonen -> gewoond.
Examples
- Ik heb gisteren de hele dag gewerkt.
- I worked all day yesterday.
- We hebben in Amsterdam gewoond.
- We lived in Amsterdam.
- Heb je het boek al gelezen?
- Have you read the book already?
The mistake to avoid
The participle must go last: "Ik heb een film gezien", not "Ik heb gezien een film".
Where this fits in
Talking about the past, Dutch A2: Tell stories about yesterday, last weekend, and life experiences using the perfectum.
