Weather sentences need a het that stands for nobody: het regent, het sneeuwt, het is bewolkt. Als introduces a subordinate clause and pushes its verb to the end. If that clause comes first, the main verb follows straight after the comma.
Examples
- Het regent sinds vanmorgen.
- It has been raining since this morning.
- Als het morgen regent, blijven wij thuis.
- If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home.
- Ik neem een paraplu mee als het bewolkt is.
- I take an umbrella with me if it is cloudy.
The mistake to avoid
The het cannot be dropped: het regent, never just "regent".
