Dutch does not soften requests with a special verb form. It adds graag instead: ik wil graag, ik heb graag, mag ik. Ik zou graag plus willen is a further step up in politeness, and kunt u is how you ask someone else to act.
Examples
- Ik wil graag een retourtje naar Amsterdam.
- I would like a return ticket to Amsterdam.
- Ik zou graag eerste klas reizen.
- I would like to travel first class.
- Kunt u mij zeggen hoe laat de trein vertrekt?
- Can you tell me what time the train leaves?
The mistake to avoid
Ik wil without graag sounds blunt, even though it is grammatically fine.
