After the modal verbs kan, skal, vil, må the second verb is a bare infinitive: jeg vil sove. After almost everything else Danish puts at in front of it: jeg plejer at sove, jeg prøver at læse. The at is never left out there.
Examples
- Jeg plejer at læse en bog om aftenen.
- I usually read a book in the evening.
- Jeg vil hvile mig lidt efter maden.
- I want to rest a bit after the meal.
- Hun kan lide at se TV inden sengetid.
- She likes watching TV before bedtime.
The mistake to avoid
No at after a modal: jeg vil sove, never "jeg vil at sove".
