Danish pairs each place with a fixed preposition that has to be learned. Work takes på: på arbejde. School and town take i: i skole, i byen. Til marks the destination of a journey: til Aarhus. Hjemmefra means away from home and needs no preposition at all.
Examples
- Jeg tager på arbejde klokken otte.
- I go to work at eight o'clock.
- Børnene tager i skole hver morgen.
- The children go to school every morning.
- Vi tager hjemmefra klokken syv.
- We leave home at seven o'clock.
The mistake to avoid
På arbejde has no article - never "på arbejdet" for going to work.
