Danish has no separate word for "the" in the basic case: you attach -en to an en-word and -et to an et-word. So en arm → armen (the arm), et hoved → hovedet (the head).
Examples
- Jeg har ondt i hovedet.
- My head hurts.
- Jeg har ondt i maven.
- My stomach hurts.
- Ryggen gør ondt om morgenen.
- My back hurts in the morning.
- Lægen kommer klokken fire.
- The doctor is coming at four.
The mistake to avoid
Putting a separate word in front ("den hoved") - the ending IS the article.
