Most Spanish verbs end in -ar, and they all take the same six endings: drop the -ar and add -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an. Learn this one pattern and you can use hundreds of verbs - hablar, trabajar, estudiar, llamar - without learning each separately.
Examples
- Hablo español y un poco de francés.
- I speak Spanish and a little French.
- ¿Dónde trabajas?
- Where do you work?
- Estudiamos juntos los martes.
- We study together on Tuesdays.
The mistake to avoid
Spanish has no separate word for "do" in questions and no "-ing" form here: hablo covers "I speak", "I do speak" and "I am speaking".
Where this fits in
Greetings & introductions, Spanish A1: Say hello, give your name, ask someone else's, and where they're from.
