To say something hurts, use у + меня/тебя/него and make the body part the subject: болит for one part, болят for several. For moods and sensations, use the dative pronoun plus a plain -о word, with no verb in the present.
Examples
- У меня болит голова.
- I have a headache.
- У неё болят зубы.
- Her teeth hurt.
- Мне холодно и грустно.
- I am cold and sad.
- Ему было плохо вчера.
- He felt unwell yesterday.
The mistake to avoid
Treating the body part as an object ("Я болю голову") — in Russian the body part does the hurting, so the verb agrees with it.
