Russian often puts the person feeling something into the dative and uses an adverb rather than an adjective: мне грустно, мне холодно, мне скучно. Adjectives with я agree with your gender instead: я устал for a man, я устала for a woman.
Examples
- Сегодня я устала.
- Today I am tired.
- Мне грустно из-за этой новости.
- I feel sad about this news.
- Они довольны новой квартирой.
- They are happy with the new flat.
The mistake to avoid
Я холодный describes an object's temperature; мне холодно is how you feel.
