To report what someone said or what you think, use the plain form plus -고: action verbs take -ㄴ다고/는다고, descriptive verbs take -다고, and nouns take -(이)라고, followed by 하다, 생각하다 or 말하다. This is how opinions and news are attributed in discussion.
Examples
- 친구가 내일 온다고 했어요.
- My friend said he's coming tomorrow.
- 뉴스에서 물가가 오른다고 해요.
- The news says prices are rising.
- 저는 이 정책이 필요하다고 생각해요.
- I think this policy is necessary.
- 그 기사가 가짜 뉴스라고 합니다.
- They say that article is fake news.
The mistake to avoid
Quoting the polite form (온다고 → 와요고) - the quote always uses the plain form, never 요.
