전에 follows the amount of time and means ago: 몇 년 전에. 동안 follows a length and means for that long: 삼 년 동안. 부터 marks a starting point and often pairs with 까지: 월요일부터.
Examples
- 몇 년 전에 서울에서 살았어요.
- A few years ago I lived in Seoul.
- 삼 년 동안 여기에서 일했어요.
- I worked here for three years.
- 월요일부터 그 사람을 못 봤어요.
- I have not seen him since Monday.
The mistake to avoid
전에 comes after the time: 몇 년 전에, not "전에 몇 년".
Where this fits in
지난 주말, Korean A2: Talk about the past: yesterday, last weekend, and travel memories.
