Irish negates by changing the verb, not by adding a word. Tá becomes níl, and every other verb takes ní in front of it, which also lenites the following consonant: tuigim becomes ní thuigim.
Examples
- Níl sé a haon a chlog fós.
- It isn't one o'clock yet.
- Ní oibrím ar an Domhnach.
- I don't work on Sundays.
- Ní thuigim.
- I don't understand.
The mistake to avoid
Ní lenites what follows - ní thuigim, not "ní tuigim".
