Reported speech is introduced by ότι or πως for a statement, αν for a yes/no question, and να for an order. With the reporting verb in the past, the present moves to the παρατατικός and the future to θα + παρατατικός: «Είπε ότι θα τηλεφωνούσε αργότερα.»

- Με ρώτησε αν είχα διαβάσει την έκθεση.
- She asked me whether I had read the report.
- Ο διευθυντής μάς ζήτησε να αναβάλουμε τη σύσκεψη.
- The director asked us to postpone the meeting.
The mistake to avoid
Πως and πώς are different words: unaccented πως introduces reported speech, accented πώς asks "how". The accent is not decoration here - it changes the sentence.
