When something is given, said or prescribed to someone, that person is marked with me, te, le, nos or les, placed before the verb. Verbs like dar, recetar, decir and mandar nearly always take one, even when Spanish also names the person afterwards.
Examples
- El médico me recetó unas pastillas.
- The doctor prescribed me some pills.
- ¿Te dio cita para el martes?
- Did he give you an appointment for Tuesday?
- Le voy a pedir el jarabe al farmacéutico.
- I am going to ask the pharmacist for the syrup.
The mistake to avoid
Le stays le whether the person is male or female - it marks the role, not the gender.
