Spanish treats most symptoms as things you have rather than things you are. Tengo fiebre, tengo tos, tengo frío. The same pattern covers tener dolor de plus a body part, and no article comes between tener and the symptom.
Examples
- Tengo fiebre y me duele la garganta.
- I have a fever and my throat hurts.
- Mi hermano tiene tos desde el lunes.
- My brother has had a cough since Monday.
- ¿Tienes dolor de cabeza?
- Do you have a headache?
The mistake to avoid
Estoy frío describes your body temperature to the touch; tengo frío is what you mean.
